Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital is a not-for-profit organization that started its mission 37 years ago to make cancer treatment more affordable to all financially challenged cancer patients. Bermaz Motor Sdn Bhd Managing Director, Dato’ Ben Yeoh, said that he was heartened by the good show of support received from the participants and those who had contributed towards this Corporate Social responsibility Program. “As a socially responsible corporate citizen, we strive to make a difference in trying to enrich the lives of those who are financially challenged, underprivileged or in dire need of help1.” He also thanked all the participants and wished for the event to continue in 2014.

2. Breaking of Fast event at orphan house of Pondok Penyayang Raudhah2
To promote the awareness and celebrate the holiday season together with the orphans in Pondok Penyayang Raudhah, the employees of the company took part in the event on 1st Aug 2013. This is the second time that the company committed itself to the program, helping to spread the festive spirit to the children. Several activities were carried out, which included playing games, singing and dance performances. Children were also presented with Duit Raya Packets (New Year Money in Red Packets), goodie-bags and food. A breaking-fast dinner consisted of the children’s favourite food of Kenny Rogers & Krispy Kreme Doughnuts was served to motivate them that the society cares for them.

3. Celebrating school holidays with children from the SIB PJ Aboriginal Church Camp
The program is held jointly with SIB PJ Aboriginal Church Camp to invite the children of Orang Asli, the indigenous people of Malaysia who make their homes within the forest, to celebrate the school holidays together. Mazda has been part of this program since 2011. Children received their gifts such as stationery and toiletries, and on top of that, they enjoyed a lunch buffet that consisted of Kenny Rogers & Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in the event.

4. Social charity event at Pusat Jagaan Titian OKU Nur3
Pusat Jagaan Titian OKU Nur is a fully private shelter home for people who are disabled, suffering from mental disorder and children who are less fortunate. Pn Normah, who is the founder, offered her help to the residents wholeheartedly. They live like a big family and take care of each other without hesitation. Mazda provides basic needs to the shelter, such as wheelchairs, refrigerators, mattresses, furniture, adult diapers, food and others.

5. Charity marathon run for Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim / Miskin Darul Hikmah4
and Shelter Home for Children5

Frost & Sullivan initiated the event called Train KL Corporate Challenge Run. Mazda contributed in the event by sending 8 groups of participants with contributions worth a total of RM4,000, as well as 400 pieces of goodie bags. The event promotes health awareness and fund raising for underprivileged children. They completed the run with outstanding results among the participants.

6. Mazda supports the Legends of Bike Malaysia
Five legendary Malaysian cyclists who won various medals in the international championships were invited to join the event in order to promote cycling as part of the sports and leisure activities. On top of that, road safety awareness was also introduced in the event.

7. Mazda Mega Gathering Track Day 2013 in Sepang International Circuit
To promote safety driving awareness, Mazda invited its RX-8 Club members to experience and participate in a safety driving race with their own cars at the F1 track in Sepang circuit. 90 out of 150 cars participated in the race.

Although the scale of the events was rather small, the company split its efforts into different kinds to make sure their offers reached those in dire need of help. A unique aspect of the CSR’s efforts is that they were carried out entirely by volunteers drawn from the company’s workforce and led by 3 committee members. Ms.Lee Ai Hoon, the head of the Social Committee, Ms.Esteena Zais, the chief of Coordinating committee and Ms.Sharon Foo, the Chief of Communication Committee and Funding, have been coordinating with those who need help through the introduction from its staff or social media. During the interview, the head of Social Committee, Ms.Lee Ai Hoon explained, “This enables the company to make sure that every single cent will reach the person who is worthy to receive help.” The chief of Coordinating Committee, Ms.Esteena Zairs also said, “The committee members will conduct surveys and visit the candidate sites without prior notice.” The CSR’s efforts are a grassroots activity that not only focuses on supporting the underprivileged, but also promotes road safety awareness and a healthy lifestyle to the public.

During the interview, we were specially touched by the story of the Social charity event at Pusat Jagaan Titian OKU Nur. Ms.Lee and Esteena told us that the founder, Pn Normah, requested for fried chicken and cakes for the residents because they were only taking one proper meal each day. For breakfast and dinner, they would only have some biscuits and bread. They are urgently in need of food such as milk and rice, but they accept whatever contributions they are given, as not many are aware of their existence.

Mazda Malaysia CSR programs have proven to benefit the relevant organizations and recipients. They have received many thanks from the society. Mazda is considering engaging social media to introduce their activities, so that the society will be more aware of the needs of others in future.

Mazda Malaysia is looking forward to continue the current programs, and on top of that, expanding in a bigger and more organized way so as to contribute to the Malaysia society in the near future.
